Is what we talk about confidential?
Whatever we talk about is confidential, with one or two exceptions around your own safety and that of others, and we will discuss this fully in our first, introductory, session and agree this between us. If I had concerns about this aspect I would hope to be able to talk to you about this first, before I needed to take any action.
I do take my work with all clients to supervision to ensure best practice but no identifiable details are given. Supervision is part of my commitment to my membership of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and their Ethical Framework.
What happens at a session?
We will have a set time to sit down together where you will have the opportunity to talk about whatever is worrying you. It will be your time, you decide what you would like to talk about. If you prefer you could write or draw or use music as a way of telling me about your worries.
The first session is slightly different. We will have 50 minutes to an hour (depending on venue) to talk. I will explain more about how I work, listen to what brings you to see a counsellor and we will see if I am the most appropriate person to help you and if we can work together.
How long will a session last?
Usually 50 minutes to one hour depending on the venue where we meet. Norwich sessions are for 50 minutes, due to using a room in a clinic, whilst those held at my home are for an hour
How many sessions will I need?
Every client is different and we will agree this between us at our initial meeting. We may work together for a short time - 6 - 12 sessions or a longer time - from 12 sessions upwards. If we work together for a longer time then we will agree on times to review our work to ensure you are happy with your progress. I offer both short and long term therapy.
How frequent will the sessions be?
This will be negotiated to suit your needs. It is usually better to start weekly if this is the first time you have had counselling. This can be revised at any time during our work together.
Where will we meet?
I practice from a room in my home click here for map, or if requested, sessions may be held in the therapy rooms in The Natural Therapy Clinic in central Norwich click here for map. I may be able to continue to see you in Norwich if this is easier for you.
I do offer home visits for the older person or those unable to leave their house, in Wymondham and the local surrounding area, but travel costs may be added dependent on mileage.
I also offer hospital, hospice and nursing home support visits - please be aware that a counselling session my not be appropriate in these circumstances due to lack of privacy or health. Costs for these visits are at a reduced price agreed in advance, dependent on the distance travelled.
Counselling sessions by secure video link
All of the above points also refer to the video link sessions as does the cancellation policy below. Payment can be set up via BACs.
I use VSee for all video sessions as it is secure, confidential, encrypted at both ends and is less prone to freezing than some other similar video links. It was developed for use in telemedicine. It is free to download and use and I am happy to talk you through the set up and how to get started and VSee do have a good user manual and online helper. Clink here for a link to the VSee website . Just click on the 'Free video chat sign up' button to download and follow the instructions from there.
You will need an email address so that I can set you up as a contact and you will need mine which I will give when we set the first session up. You also need a computer, either laptop or desktop with an attached or integral video camera, and it can be either Windows or Mac as there are both versions. I am using the Windows version. There are also versions for iPad or Android tablet/phone users if you prefer but be aware that the picture size will be smaller.
Once our sessions have finished I will delete you from my contact list on VSee for confidentiality and request that you delete mine at that point as well. If we do work together again after this we will set up as new contacts.
Please get in touch if you are interested, would like to know more or wish to set up sessions.
What can I do if I am unhappy about the counselling I receive or the counsellor?
I would hope you would feel able to talk to me so we can address the problem together but, I understand this may not always be possible.
You may contact the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (please see link on my 'About me' page), they have a formal complaints procedure.
How do I contact you if I want to talk to you about counselling or ask you a question?
Please use the contact number on the right, either telephone or text me or click to email me using the contact form if you have any questions that are not answered here or you wish to speak to me about my work.
